How Do Your Kidneys Help Maintain Health?
In addition to removing wastes and fluid from your body, your kidneys perform other important jobs including the regulation of chemicals in your blood such as sodium, potassium and phosphorus and releasing hormones into your blood to control blood pressure, make red blood cells and build strong bones.
Kidney disease includes any condition that damages your kidneys and decreases their ability to keep you healthy. Some people are more likely than others to develop kidney disease specially those who have diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure or a family history of chronic kidney disease.
Two simple tests done in your blood and urine can determine kidney function. Blood pressure should also be checked at least on a yearly basis. Key factors to prevent kidney disease are to always maintain your body hydrated (6-8 glasses of water per day), avoid the use of over the counter pain killers and have a yearly medical checkup.
Remember always that early detection and prevention are very important.

Low Fat Diet vs. High Fiber Diet?
Which Reduces LDL,“Bad”,Cholesterol Better?
In a study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a group of adults with elevated cholesterol were placed on 3 different diets. 1. Standard Low-Fat Diet: High Fiber, Whole Grains and Vegetables 2. Routine Intervention Diet: Plant Sterol Ester-enriched margarine, oats, barley, psyllium, soy milk, tofu, nuts, peas, beans and lentils. 3. Intense Intervention Diet: same as the Routine Intervention Diet but had frequent visits with a Dietitian.
THE RESULT: LDL was lowered 3% in Standard Diet, 13 % in Routine Diet and 14% with Intense Diet.
TAKE HOME MESSAGE: A Balanced Mediterranean Diet of 3 meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) with 2 snacks in between (11 am and 4 pm). Incorporate Oats (oatmeal for breakfast or Avena Oatmeal Drink for a snack), Barley (as in Barley Mushroom Soup), Psylllium (Metamucil Drink) Soy Milk (With Breakfast or midday snack with low fat bannana nut muffin), Tofu (stir fry with vegetables), Nuts (Walnuts sprinkled on a bed of Arugula with Apples and Gorgonzola), Beans (White Bean Salad mixed with Tuna) and finally Lentils (think Mjaddara: lentils, rice and carmelized onions: Our Daily Bread Restaurant in Coral Gables). Whether you eat out or cook at home, South Florida restaurants have many of these items incorporated into their menus.

Nutrtion and Your Health: Vitamin D? How Much Do You Need?
We all know that Vitamin D is important for healthy bones. But did you also know it is important in cell growth, reducing inflammation and has a role in neuromuscular and immune function? As we become more health conscious and educated about our medical needs, take a moment to review how much Vitamin D you are ingesting each day.
The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for a 19-50 year old male/female is 600 IU. Are you eating foods high in Vitamin D such as Salmon (554 IU), Tuna (154 IU) and Mackerel (388 IU)? National Institutes of Health How about Fish Liver Oils? Doesn’t sound appetizing but a whopping 1,360 IU per tablespoon will help! You can get small amounts in Beef Liver, Cheese and Egg Yolks. Fortified foods such as Milk (100 IU), Orange Juice, Margaine and Yogurt help, but on a smaller level. So if you think you are getting enough Vitamin D from your morning glass of milk, crunch your numbers and you will realize you are not.
Don’t forget that going out in the sun on a daily basis for 15-30 minutes will also improve your Vitamin D Levels. How you ask? The inactive Vitamin D becomes Active Vitamin D when you expose your skin to the Sun. For Floridians, this is not a problem. But for our friends in the North, improve your diet or just visit us in South Florida on a regular basis!

Avoid Sports Injuries. Stretch!
Have you been out of the gym for several months? Anxious to get back to working out on a regular basis? When planning your workout or running schedule, you need to stretch, before/after the workout. Stretching improves flexibility and blood flow which allows the joint to have a better range of motion. This is important because if you are doing repetitious movements and have poor flexiblity, you risk injuring yourself and developing Tendinitis in a joint. With joint inflammation, you risk being out of the gym for an extended period. Here are the Do’s and Dont’s of Stretching.
Do
-Stretch major muscle groups first
-Light exercise (walking and/or light running) and then stretch
-Stretch each muscle group for 15-30 seconds
Don’t
-Do not bounce during stretching, you risk tearing a muscle
-Do not stretch to the point of pain
